Imodium is used for treating and controlling diarrhea, including traveler’s diarrhea, and reducing the volume of discharge from an ileostomy (a surgical opening in the wall of the intestines). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before taking Imodium, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Imodium, if you have liver disease, infectious diarrhea, or other bowel problems (eg, ulcerative colitis, pseudomembranous colitis, blockage, enlarged colon), if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. – If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Imodium during pregnancy. If your diarrhea does not improve within 48 hours or if you develop a fever, stop using Imodium and contact your doctor. Imodium is not recommended for use in children younger than 1 year old. Use Imodium with extreme caution in children 1 to 18 years of age.
