Drug Uses
Sumycin is used for treatment or prevention of infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.
How Taken
Take Sumycin with a glass of water as directed by your doctor. Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking Sumycin. Take Sumycin on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Do not take antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, preparations containing bismuth, iron, zinc, or sodium bicarbonate, or calcium rich foods (eg, milk, dairy products, and calcium–enriched juices) within 2 to 3 hours before or after taking Sumycin. These products bind with Sumycin, preventing its full absorption. To clear up your infection completely, continue using Sumycin for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Sumycin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Sumycin, if you have diarrhea, a stomach infection, or kidney problems, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. Sumycin has been shown to cause harm to the human fetus. If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Sumycin during pregnancy. Sumycin is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast–feed while taking Sumycin. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. Some medicines may interact with Sumycin. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Sumycin may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Sumycin. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. Use of Sumycin in children may cause permanent discoloring of the teeth. Long–term or repeated use of Sumycin may cause a second infection. Contact your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Lab tests may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments. Sumycin may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pill. To prevent pregnancy, be sure to use an additional form of birth control while using Sumycin. Use Sumycin with extreme caution in children younger than 8 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are– anorexia, epigastric distress, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bulky loose stools, stomatitis, sore throat, glossitis, black hairy tongue, dysphagia, hoarseness, enterocolitis, and inflammatory lesions (with candidal overgrowth) in the anogenital region. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur.
Storage
Store Sumycin at 68 – 77 °F (20 – 25 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Sumycin out of the reach of children.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately.More Information Sumycin may cause dizziness or blurred vision. These effects may worsen if Sumycin is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Sumycin with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Sumycin should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
