Drug Uses
Floxin is used for treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by certain bacteria.
How Taken
Take Floxin with a full glass of water as directed by your doctor. Take Floxin on an empty stomach or with a meal. It is recommended to drink extra fluids while taking Floxin. Do not drink milk or eat dairy products, or take antacids, sucralfate, or vitamins within 2 hours before or after taking Floxin. Floxin works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Floxin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Floxin, if you have diabetes, have heart problems, including irregular heartbeat, liver or kidney disease, low potassium levels, if you have Alzheimer disease, hardening in the arteries in the brain, seizures, increased pressure on the brain, or another central nervous system disorder, have tendonitis, your skin is sensitive to sunlight, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Floxin during pregnancy. Floxin is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast–feed while taking Floxin. Some medicines may interact with Floxin. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Floxin may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet (UV) light (eg, tanning beds). Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period of time. Diabetic patients should monitor their blood sugar regularly while taking Floxin with an antidiabetic medicine. Talk with your doctor at once if a reaction caused by low blood sugar occurs. Notify your dentist or doctor that you are taking Floxin before you have any dental work or surgery. Long–term or repeated use of Floxin may cause a second infection. Contact your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. If severe diarrhea, stomach cramps/pain, or bloody stools occur, contact your doctor at once. This could be a sign of a serious side effect that needs immediate medical attention. Floxin is not recommended for use in children younger than 18 years of age, safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are– Diarrhea, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, sensitivity to sunlight, trouble sleeping, vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately– allergic reactions, agitation, anxiety, bizarre behavior, bloody stools, confusion, convulsions, dark urine, depression, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, excessive urination, thirst, or hunger, fatigue, fever, hallucinations, hoarseness, increased pressure within the head, joint or muscle pain or swelling, lightheadedness, loss of consciousness, nervousness, nightmares, pale stools, rapid heartbeat, rash, skin burning, redness, swelling, blisters, itching, or skin inflammation, restlessness, seizures, sleeplessness, stomach pain/cramps, suicidal thoughts, swelling, tightness of the throat, tingling, tremors, vaginal irritation or discharge, yellowing of skin or eyes.
Storage
Store Floxin below 86 °F (30 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Floxin out of the reach of children.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Floxin overdose are– facial swelling and numbness, hot and cold flushes, mild to moderate disorientation, slurring of speech.
More Information
Floxin may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Floxin is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Floxin with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Floxin should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
